Get Inspired - Writing is Right

We all have things that we procrastinate about doing, one that seems appropriate for this particular Hub is how does one return to their Hub after a period of absence and re-ignite the creative spark that got you started in the first place, seamlessly of course! Blogger's block, writer's freeze, what ever the reason, it can be very difficult to simply pick up where you left off.

Unfortunately, the search engines don't send you a reminder card, they do however, tend to forget you like a one-night stand, as they prefer fresh content on their SERP, as they also have a reputation to uphold! In fact, there are so many creative new fish in the sea of .coms that google and the other search engines won't even know you that you have left. Writers abandon their precious work all the time. Folks get busy, life happens, distractions abound, must our words of wisdom fall to the wasted word wayside? Maybe not.

There must be a way to collect and can those original revelations of potential paragraphs that came to you while stuck in traffic the other day, then simply open your canned container of word gems at a later date while in the company of your trusty keyboard. But will it work? My own experience was telling, I found that I also had to recapture the creative mood, which is, by the way, not so easy to transport. Don't despair, there are a few things that I found helpful...

1. Schedule a writing time each day, I know it sounds contradictory but the brain must be trained to be creative. Otherwise, it is too easy to put it off. If it becomes part of your daily routine then it becomes an accomplishment. Like most things, you will have productive days and down days but...you are writing! I always loved to write but until I actually signed up for a creative writing class which forced me to create an assigned paper each week, I was not putting thoughts to paper - thinking about it doesn't count. Because of this class, I now have a binder of original short stories that I am immensely proud of.

2. Get those thoughts out on paper, however rough, it doesn't have to be perfect, that's why they call it a rough draft. I really got hung up on this one. I would write one sentence, revising it numerous times and then out of frustration, I would quit because I was not getting anything accomplished. Although it may be difficult, I learned that the best way to preserve those random bits of creative brilliance is to write them down, without worrying about spelling, punctuation, structure, etc...Ouch....But it does work. All of your mumblings can be edited later, it is the thought that you want to capture.

3. Another interesting way to break that writing barrier is to illustrate your message. Especially if you do well with a more visual interpretation, try a mind map. This helped me to organize the content of what I wanted to write about and it provides an alternate perspective. It can even change the direction of your work or perhaps just enhance it. You can center your mind map around the topic you are writing about, with various branches that represent paragraphs, chapters or even sub-topics that you want to cover in your final piece. That is the thing that is fun about doing mind maps, you can use art and colors to illustrate your thoughts, analyze your life goals, outline a story or prioritize a project at work. It gets the creative juices flowing so look out!

4. Learn to meditate, or at least find a quiet space where you feel comfortable and relaxed. Now try to literally de-tense your entire body. I accomplish this by tightening each part of my body, from the tip of my head, facial muscles, neck, on down to each toe, one by one. Hold tight for a count of ten and then slowly release. By the time you get to your feet you should be relaxed and free from disrupting thoughts. Everyone has their own favorite way to relax, I try to envision the ocean, with waves coming in, one after the other. Once your mind is free from distractions and your body is relaxed it allows fro the manifestation of mental images that morph into stories, thoughts and ideas. Sometimes I experience the presence of vivid colors and pictures of various things - other times I am simply able to enjoy being stress free. Whatever the benefit, I have found meditating richly rewarding and enlightening. In this day of multiple distractions and to-do's, reserve writing time as something beneficial for the soul, as difficult as it may be at times to find the words, writing is right.
